As a leadership coach, it is always encouraging to realize that the work I am doing is resonating with my clients and our coaching conversations are successful. Meditating on this idea got me thinking about how a truly successful coaching relationship looks and how to define that success.
As I talk to the students in ALCN’s coach training courses (particularly our Summer Intensive course which takes place for three weeks from July 19- August 7), I know is very important to give them a barometer to help gauge whether their future coaching sessions are successful. With that in mind, I thought it would be useful to define successful coaching – hence the subject for this blog – six attributes of successful leadership coaching.
The Assumptions of a Beneficial Coaching Session
- The coachee has the answers – As a coach it is important to remember that you are simply a guide in the process. Your job is to challenge the coachee to dig deep and discover the things the things that they already know about themselves. While the coach my give suggestions as to a course of action, it is the job of the client to make the ultimate decisions about the final plan and even take the next steps to implement it.
- The coach is not an enabler – Another trap that is easy to fall into is to tell the coachee all the things they want to hear – to make them feel good about themselves. However, if the first assumption regarding the coachee already knowing the answers and having the power to make the decisions is true, then the coach is instead a channel towards the success of the coachee – in essence, the coach works as the catalyst for change.
- The coachee must be held accountable within the coaching conversation – While the coach provides the foundation towards success, the coachee must actually do the work to be successful. With the coachee’s input, the coach helps create the blueprint; however the coachee must actually construct the building.
- The goal of the coach is to elevate the client towards their higher purpose – This means that the coach is passionate about seeing the coachee succeed. They have a firm interest in the ultimate achievement of their client and work hard to encourage them towards that end. As a coach, I believe that working with my clients is not my job, rather it is my life calling.
- The coachee must trust the coach completely – This means that all conversations between the coach and the client are held in the strictest of confidence. It also means the both parties have an open mind and trust each other implicitly. This trust comes in the form of respectful coaching conversations and open dialogue.
- Coaching is about the coachee – In the end, the coaching experience is not about the coach at all, rather it is about what the coachee creates as they move towards the self they desire. With that in mind, it is important that the coach gives the coachee the space they need to create this reality while offering support as they work through the process.
